Conversation with Max

A couple weeks ago I told one of my piano students that I was going to have a baby. Being the eldest of three and a first-grader, Max proceeded to tell me his thoughts on the matter. First, he showed his excitement for me and then paused as if considering whether to say more. "But you know, babies can sometimes be annoying. They can be loud, and they cry, and they can be stinky too."

Then Max sat down and got a ponderous look on his young face. "It's funny," he said, "People have a baby and it's either the beginning of their life or the end of their life."

"What?"

"You know, it's either the beginning of their life or the end of their life."

Either I wasn't sure what he was getting at or Max was becoming a philosopher rather early. "Max, I don't understand, what do you mean?"

"You know, some people have babies when it's the beginning of their life -- like my parents or you. But for other people it's the end of their life -- like John the Baptist. His parents were old!"

"Oh, I see, they were pretty old, weren't they?"

So Max told me all about the story of Elizabeth and Zechariah.

I'm glad I didn't have to wait til "the end of my life" to have a baby as several biblical women did. I'm also glad that I don't see having a baby as the end of my life either. Not that I see it as the beginning of my life. It's just a new chapter.

Max sounds like he could have been in "Where the Wild Things Are". Bery fun little boy. But what he said is also inadvertently very thought provoking. I consider being a Mother to be the most important passage in my life.
